Our Center for Anatomic Pathology is staffed by board-certified, subspecialty trained pathologists expert in the diagnosis of disease. They work as a multidisciplinary team on cases that require overlapping areas of expertise. All of these experts are available for consultation.

Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology

Bone and soft tissue pathology is the study of bone, skeletal muscle and soft tissue disorders including degenerative, inflammatory, neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions. Using state-of-the-art diagnostic tools, we work as a multidisciplinary team to ensure correct diagnosis of bone and soft tissue tumors, including sarcomas.

Our board-certified pathologists are experts in the diagnosis of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions of bones and joints, sarcomas, soft tissue and bone tumors.

Breast Pathology

We provide expert diagnosis for breast lesions including all of the information necessary to guide patient management. We work closely with our clinical colleagues to ensure optimal patient care as part of a multidisciplinary approach to breast disease.  We have extensive experience interpreting all types of breast specimens.

Clinical Expertise
Our board certified pathologists evaluate specimens including core and excisional biopsies, surgical resections, sentinel lymph node biopsies and axillary dissections.

  • Evaluation for Estrogen (ER) and Progesterone (PR) receptors according to ASCO/CAP guidelines is available and is routinely done for all cases of ductal carcinoma in-situ and invasive carcinoma

Cardiovascular Pathology

Our board-certified pathologists focus on diseases of the heart and blood vessels. This is an integral part of Lehigh Valley Health Network's program for the study and treatment of heart disease. In addition to our work with the health network’s cardiologists and surgeons, we collaborate with clinicians and pathologists throughout the region. Our experienced pathologists, in combination with a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis, enable us to provide accurate diagnosis and second opinions as well as sound recommendations for treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Cytopathology/FNA

The HNL Cytopathology Division offers the highest level of accuracy and precision. Staffed by board-certified pathologists and American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)-certified cytotechnologists, we provide a full complement of services including routine screening and diagnostic testing of gynecologic specimens, using the advanced Thin Prep® Pap Test™ technology for more accurate detection of abnormalities. High risk HPV testing (Digene hybrid capture II) is available upon request. Non-gynecologic specimens from all body sites are evaluated, including fine needle aspirations, brushings and fluids. Immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry are performed on cytologic specimens as necessary to obtain diagnostic and prognostic information.

Our board-certified pathologists and ASCP-certified cytotechnologists offer a comprehensive cytodiagnostic, screening and consultative service, including examination of gynecologic, non-gynecologic and fine needle aspiration specimens.

Dermatopathology

Dermatopathologists specialize in diagnosing disorders of the skin under a microscope. The subspecialty of dermatopathology is a combination of both dermatology (the diagnosis and treatment of skin, hair and nail diseases) and pathology (identification of diseases microscopically).

At Health Network Laboratories, our dermatopathologists work as part of a multidisciplinary team to diagnose:

Endocrine Pathology

The Endocrine Pathology Division of HNL's Center for Anatomic Pathology focuses on the diagnosis and characterization of diseases of the endocrine system. The Endocrine Pathology Division is committed to providing services to patients with benign and malignant disorders of the endocrine gland as well as assisting surgeons, endocrinologists and oncologists in the care of their patients.

Genitourinary Pathology

Genitourinary pathology includes diseases of the urinary tract (kidney, ureters, bladder and urethra) and male reproductive organs (prostate, testes and penis). Our pathologists provide a full range of diagnostic services including interpretation of biopsies and comprehensive evaluation of surgical resections. Immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostic tests are used in conjunction with routine histopathology as appropriate.

Clinical Expertise
The HNL Genitourinary Pathology Division provides the full breadth of sub-specialty diagnostic services necessary to evaluate specimens obtained in the office setting or at the time of surgery.

Gynecologic Pathology

Gynecologic and Obstetric pathology is the subspecialty of pathology dealing with diseases of the female reproductive system. This area also includes diseases of the placenta.
The gynecologic pathologists at Health Network Labs work closely with gynecologic oncologists and surgeons, radiation therapists, and radiologists to diagnose and render state-of-the-art care to women with gynecologic neoplasms.

Head and Neck Pathology

The Head and Neck Pathology Division at Health Network Labs is responsible for the study of tumors of the head and neck, including tumors of the thyroid, salivary glands and the upper respiratory tract.

Clinical Expertise
The HNL Center for Anatomic Pathology's Division of Head and Neck Pathology is staffed by board-certified pathologists who provide comprehensive diagnostic services for neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the head and neck.  Biopsy and resection specimens are routinely evaluated; FNA specimens are interpreted by members of the cytopathology division.  A variety of immunohistochemical and molecular tests are available ensuring accurate diagnoses and allowing our clinical colleagues to provide the most appropriate therapy.

Hematopathology

Health Network Laboratories' Center for Anatomic Pathology offers a complete range of hematopathology services including comprehensive evaluation of bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and peripheral blood specimens as well as consultation on in-house and outside cases. Flow cytometry, cytogenetics, immunohistochemistry, and molecular diagnostics are an integral part of HNL hematopathology services. Our testing and consultation services are designed to assist treating physicians, especially oncologists and hematologist facing difficult diagnostic problems in hematopathology.

The HNL Histology Laboratory performs routine staining, along with a full complement of histochemical special stains. Our histology staff also regularly handles sophisticated muscle and nerve biopsy specimens and employs extensive enzyme histochemical studies and ultramicrotomy for electron microscopic analysis.

The HNL Immunohistochemistry Laboratory offers a comprehensive menu of individual antibodies and tailored diagnostic panels to assist in accurate diagnosis, tumor typing, grading, staging, prognostics and treatment selection.

Oral Pathology is the branch of pathology that deals with the structural and functional changes in cells, tissues, and organs of the oral cavity that cause or are caused by disease. We practice a multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.

Pediatric Pathology

The pediatric pathology service employs a team of pathologists with a variety of subspecialty interests to provide diagnostic interpretation of neoplastic and non-neoplastic processes from all areas of surgical pathology and hematopathology. The pathologists work in cooperation with the pediatric clinical research team to provide the most current molecular diagnostic and prognostic testing and to enroll patients in research treatment trials.

Pulmonary Pathology

Pulmonary pathology is the subspecialty which deals with the diagnosis of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the lungs and thoracic pleura. Diagnostic specimens are often obtained via bronchoscopic transbronchial biopsy, CT-guided percutaneous biopsy or video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS).

At Health Network Laboratories, our transplant pathology services include interpretation of renal, pancreas, cardiac and liver transplant biopsies and consultation to transplant surgeons and requesting clinicians. A transplant biopsy kit with appropriate solutions for submission of specimens will be provided, if necessary. Advanced technology ensures rapid diagnoses within 24 business hours.
